Dexcom's API gives authorized apps a user's continuous glucose monitor data after a staged approval, covered in the Dexcom API integration guide. This page sets out the other routes and, as importantly, which apparent alternatives still lead back to Dexcom, as of October 27, 2026. It makes no regulatory claims beyond what Dexcom's own pages state.
Why teams look for a Dexcom API alternative#
- Staged approval. Registration is free, but real data needs Limited Access, where an app can have up to 5 authorized users, and then Full Access after Dexcom "will setup a technical and commercial review of your app".
- A fixed contract. If Dexcom authorizes a Limited Access request, it sends "a standard, non-negotiable Data Licensing Agreement".
- No guarantee. Dexcom says it "reserves the right to decline Limited or Full Access requests for apps that do not meet certain commercial and technical standards".
- Regulation is on you. Dexcom states that developers are responsible for ensuring that their apps comply with all applicable regulations, and points to the FDA's Digital Health site for US information.
Aggregators: one integration, the same Dexcom gate#
Several aggregators list Dexcom, and the four whose pages describe how they connect it route you back to Dexcom's own process:
- Terra says "Dexcom requires every company to connect users through its own app on the Dexcom developer portal", and that when you discuss the production upgrade the relationship is entirely between your company and Dexcom. Its table marks Dexcom credentials "Required". See the Terra integration guide.
- Rook marks Dexcom "Requires developer account" and says the process "can take several weeks".
- Thryve lists Dexcom as a web source with "no" in its Shared oAuth-client column.
- Validic says the customer "may need to apply with the vendor in certain circumstances", that Dexcom is supported in the US and EU only, and that the EU is currently not accepting applications.
- Spike lists Dexcom on its integrations page, and Sahha lists it as a source with a cloud API connection; neither page we read says whose Dexcom credentials are used.
What an aggregator adds is the plumbing: one schema with your other devices, and someone else maintaining the connection once you are approved. Health data aggregator APIs compares them, and Terra vs Open Wearables covers the self-hosted option.
The alternatives that do change the route#
Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect. Both stores have a device-neutral glucose type: Apple documents bloodGlucose as "A quantity sample type that measures the user's blood glucose level", and Health Connect's BloodGlucoseRecord "Captures the concentration of glucose in the blood", one reading per record. An app that reads them gets glucose from any source that writes there, on the user's phone, without a Dexcom developer account. Whether a user's Dexcom readings are there, and how often, depends on their own setup; the Dexcom developer pages we read do not describe that sync, so test it rather than promise it. Rook and Sahha both list Dexcom among sources they read this way. See the blood glucose data guide.
Research. For studies, Dexcom's access page sends researchers to its research portal rather than the developer program: "If you are looking to access the Dexcom Web API for research purposes, clinical studies, etc., please visit our research portal". Platforms built for study teams are compared in wearable research data platforms.
A user's own data. Dexcom points users who want to see their data in the cloud, do retrospective analysis or download it as a CSV to Dexcom Clarity, not to the API.
| Alternative | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Aggregators (Terra, Rook, Thryve, Validic, Spike, Sahha) | Dexcom beside other devices, once approved | You still go through Dexcom; fees |
| HealthKit or Health Connect glucose types | Phone apps that accept any glucose source | Depends on the user's own sync; on-device |
| Dexcom research portal | Clinical and academic studies | A separate Dexcom process |
| Dexcom Clarity | A user looking at or exporting their own data | Not an API for your app |
Which should you pick?#
- A commercial app built around Dexcom CGM data. Dexcom's developer program, directly or through an aggregator, and plan for the review and the Data Licensing Agreement either way.
- A phone app that wants glucose from whatever meter or sensor a user has. Read HealthKit and Health Connect, and treat Dexcom as one possible source.
- A study. Start with Dexcom's research portal.
- One person's own data. Dexcom Clarity's export.
For another health-device maker's options, see Withings API alternatives.
Is switching easy?#
Moving between aggregators after approval is mostly re-mapping fields, because the Dexcom relationship stays yours. Moving to HealthKit or Health Connect changes the architecture from server-side pulls to reads on the phone, and the data you get is whatever the user's apps wrote, so validate it against your product's needs.
Frequently asked questions
- Do aggregators let me skip Dexcom's approval?
- Not in the documentation we read on October 27, 2026. Terra says Dexcom requires every company to connect users through its own app on the Dexcom developer portal, Rook marks Dexcom as requiring a developer account, Thryve shows no shared OAuth client for Dexcom, and Validic says customers may need to apply with Dexcom and that the EU is not accepting applications.
- Can I read Dexcom glucose from Apple Health or Health Connect?
- If the user's Dexcom readings are written there, which the Dexcom developer pages we read do not describe. Both stores document the type: Apple's bloodGlucose measures the user's blood glucose level, and Health Connect's BloodGlucoseRecord captures one blood glucose reading per record. Reading them gives you glucose from any source that writes to them.
- How can a Dexcom user get their own data without building an app?
- Dexcom points users who want to see their data in the cloud, do retrospective analysis or download it as a CSV to Dexcom Clarity, its own web tool. Dexcom says Clarity shows trends, statistics and day-by-day data and can email them to the user's healthcare professional, all without registering as a developer.
- Is there a Dexcom route for research studies?
- Yes. Dexcom's Scopes and Access page tells developers who want the Dexcom Web API for research purposes or clinical studies to visit its research portal instead of applying through the standard developer upgrade. This site's research data platforms comparison covers tools built for study teams.
