Four Fitness APIs Are Free and Expensive

12 of 24 products cost the developer nothing, and four of those are rated high engineering effort. The API price is the smallest term in the integration.

Twelve of the 24 products in this site's API directory carry a developer cost of free. Four of them are rated high engineering effort at the same time: wger, MediaPipe, MoveNet and Apple Vision body pose. Counted from the directory on 2026-09-01.

That overlap is the whole story of pricing a health integration. The number on the pricing page is the smallest term in the total, and for the four products above it is zero while the work is the largest in the directory.

Free is the largest group in the directory by a clear margin. It is also the least informative label on any row, because it covers two arrangements that have almost nothing in common.

Two kinds of free#

The first kind is a hosted service or a platform capability you call. USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts serve you data over the network. HealthKit and Health Connect are platform SDKs already on the device. Polar, Fitbit, Oura and WHOOP give you developer access without charging you for it. Someone else runs the servers, ships the fixes and owns the uptime. Free here means what you would expect it to mean.

The second kind is an open model or a project you host. The licence is free. The operation is a line item on your engineering budget forever. That is where the four free and high-effort products sit.

Three of the four are pose models, which is not a coincidence. Vision work moves the cost from the invoice to the device: frame handling, thermal limits, battery, and an accuracy question that only real users on real hardware can answer. The effort column is the price#

The directory rates engineering effort as low for 9 products, medium for 10 and high for 5. Four of the five high-effort products are free. The fifth is Garmin, which is contact-sales.

Read that again, because it inverts the usual assumption. In this directory, high effort correlates with paying nothing, not with paying a lot. Money buys you someone else's engineering time. When you decline to spend it, you spend your own.

That is often the right call. A team that already runs a computer vision pipeline should absolutely use a free model rather than license a motion SDK. A team that has never shipped a camera feature and estimates the work at two sprints because the model is free is making the classic error, and the schedule finds out before the budget does.

Nutrition shows the same pattern in miniature#

The two free nutrition sources in the directory, USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts, are both rated medium engineering effort. Nutritionix, which is free-tier-then-paid, is rated low. Edamam, also free-tier-then-paid, is medium.

The effort you avoid by paying is search and matching. A free database gives you records. Turning "two eggs and a slice of toast" into records is a problem you now own, along with the missing fields, the duplicate entries and the branded items nobody has photographed yet. Teams that pick the free source and then rebuild a matching layer usually spend more than the paid tier would have cost, and they find out six weeks in.

Free models stop moving, and that is your problem now#

The served MediaPipe Pose Landmarker model files were last modified in April 2023. No updates to the MoveNet pose models have been observed since 2024, and the single-person models remain Apache-2.0. Both of those are confirmed in our change log rather than reported.

A stable model is good news for reproducibility. It is bad news if you were quietly hoping accuracy would improve on its own. It will not. Whatever accuracy you measure at launch is roughly what you keep until you do the work yourself, and nobody is going to send you a release note.

So pin the version, keep the file you tested with, and treat a model update as an event with a test plan rather than a dependency bump. The specifics of the served files are on the MediaPipe Pose Landmarker models page.

Free does not mean ungated either#

Several of the twelve free products still make you get approved. Fitbit, Oura, WHOOP, HealthKit and Health Connect are all free to the developer and all state an approval gate. Paying nothing has no effect on how long you wait, which is counted in 12 of 24 fitness APIs have an approval gate.

The reverse also happens. wger, MediaPipe, MoveNet and Apple Vision state no gate at all, so the four hardest integrations in the free group are the ones you can start this afternoon. Nothing stops you. That is exactly why teams underestimate them.

How to budget one of these#

Price the integration, not the API. Three questions get you most of the way.

Who operates it after launch? If the answer is you, add a permanent share of an engineer to the estimate, not a one-time build cost.

What happens when the data or the model is wrong? A hosted vendor has a support channel. An open project has an issue tracker and your own weekend. For exercise content, ExerciseDB versus wger is the version of that question people ask most.

What does free stop covering? For anything with a free tier rather than a free product, find the boundary before you build, because you cross it precisely when the feature succeeds.

Then run a spike before committing. One metric, one real device, one week. The gap between the demo and the measurement is the actual price of the free API, and it is knowable in advance.

A paid SDK moves some of that to a vendor. Which is cheaper depends on how much of that work your team was going to do anyway.
